Caritas - Diffa - Niger

Teenage boys and men collect rubbish as part of a Caritas community activity program in the town of Diffa, Niger on February 12, 2016. 65 men without other means of employment engage in the program collecting rubbish in the streets of various neighbourhoods of Diffa. They participate 10 times per month and are paid 1300 francs (approx. $2) each time. Seen as vulnerable group, especially young men between the age of 14-35 who are susceptible to joining Boko Haram because of no means of earning an income in Diffa, the purpose of the program is the give these men some means of earning money. Many youth after school in the past purchased motorbikes and worked as taxi drivers in the city. With the military banning this in late 2015 because of the frequency of attacks by Boko Haram on motorbikes, approximately 600 who worked in this profession are without jobs. The Caritas staff leading the program undertake awareness campaigns teaching young men about all the damaging effects of the current crisis in the region triggered by Boko Haram.
